GESSS Abstracts

Call for Abstracts

  • A call for abstracts needs to be forwarded to all universities within the state. Download a Call for Abstract Letter Template
  • Abstracts can be submitted by research interns/undergraduate summer research students, Honours, Masters, or PhD students from all fields of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences
  • A choice between poster or oral presentations may be offered to students
  • The Committee will determine which abstracts are selected for poster or oral presentations, or neither if deemed to be of insufficient quality or of irrelevant content

Abstract Format

  • Abstracts shouldn't exceed 500 words (consider 300 words max). Shorter abstracts will lessen review time, but provide authors scope to say something meaningful
  • Consider whether abstracts include figures
  • Design an abstract template and make it easily available (e.g. via GESSS website) before abstract submissions open
  • Consider how abstracts will be submitted (by email, website or shared drive) and format (e.g. Word, PDF)
  • Abstracts should be suitable for black and white printing (to save colour printing costs)

Abstract Review

  • Have 3-4 people review abstracts (more opinions make it difficult to form decisions)
  • Reviewers could include Program and Abstracts Committee Members, the Chair and/or Vice Chair
  • Could include reviewers who are specialists in fields related to the abstracts (if other reviewers aren't experienced in that field)

Abstract volume

  • Abstracts for poster or oral presentations must be published in an abstract volume available on the day of GESSS
  • Download the Abstract Volume Template here
  • You can make the abstract volume available on your GESSS website
  • Abstract volumes are to acknowledge sponsors

After all GESSS are held, the GSA will collate all abstracts into a GSA Abstracts Volume which will be freely available to members and can be referenced. This volume will also be available in digital format.
