NEW BOOK ON THE TOOWOOMBA DISTRICT
Perched on the edge of a major escarpment, the city of Toowoomba has a fascinating geological and landscape history. Its basalt terrain and lateritic red soils are well known, but it is not often recognised that these are within a separate lava field, with craters and lava pools, younger than the adjacent Main Range Volcano. Even younger, apparently overlying a laterite profile, are trachyte and rhyolite lavas to the northwest, whose origins and age relationships remain uncertain. Landscape development is equally fascinating, with streams draining to the northeast once flowing to the Burnett River, before they were captured by a tributary of the Bremer River which became the upper Brisbane River.

Edwin Willey and other authors who have spent much of their careers around Toowoomba describe this geology and underlying older rocks, together with the soils, underground water, useful materials and landslide problems of the district.  A major section describes excursions where you can see examples of the rocks and landscapes. The book costs $11.00 + $4.10 postage.

NEW BOOK ON THE OLD ROCKS OF NORTHWEST QUEENSLAND
The geological framework of the highly mineralised Mount Isa- Cloncurry district is well known to be fiendishly complex and subject to varying interpretations. This book is the first attempt distil this complexity for a non-specialist audience. Laurie Hutton and Ian Withnall have worked for many years across the district for the Geological Survey of Queensland. They now summarise the sequence of events that built up this Mount Isa Inlier from 1870 to 1400 million years ago, possibly as part of the ancient Nuna Supercontinent. They also summarise the various mineralisation styles and major mines that have been encountered.

Other chapters describe the younger rocks that surround the Inlier, the landscapes and interesting features such as stromatolites, an asteroid impact structure and the Riversleigh fossils deposits. A major chapter accompanied by detailed maps suggests excursions where you can see the rocks, some historical mines, and the landscapes including Lawn Hill Gorge. The book is also $11.00 + $4.10 postage.

GREAT ARTESIAN BASIN
The Great Artesian Basin conjures up images of unbounded supplies of underground water providing the needs for our vast outback. But it is much more complex and interesting than that. The Basin began about 200 million years ago, and then for more than 100 million years much of our continent was covered by vast river plains and inland seas, swarming with ancient life. When the seas dried away, the rocks that had been deposited were deeply weathered and leached, and old land surfaces with hard caps formed, remnants of which can still be seen today. Petroleum, coal and gas resources occur in its rocks, other minerals are extracted, and precious opals are mined at several colourful towns. There are records of huge asteroid impacts, and interesting fossils of dinosaurs are being found and displayed. How did the Basin originate, and how did the underground water and other minerals come to be there, and how they are extracted? This handbook has chapters explaining this Great Artesian Basin in all its aspects, and describes what can be seen when travelling across its vast distances, particularly in Queensland. The clear non-technical treatment makes the book a must for visitors and locals alike, as well as teachers and students. It extends the coverage of previous Rocks and Landscapes books on the eastern parts of Queensland.

WET TROPICS
The Wet Tropics book explains how this region has formed over many millions of years, and the results of this geological history. It describes the relatively young volcanic activity on the Atherton Tableland, how the landscapes and scenery have developed, and how and where mineral deposits formed. It includes chapters on the development and habitats of theGreat Barrier Reef, the region’s soil types and erosion potential, and its water resources. The authors are from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences of James Cook University in Townsville and Cairns, and are distinguished in their respective fields. This book costs $11 + $4.10 post and pack.

NATIONAL PARKS
These three books by Warwick Willmott brilliantly describe the geology of most of Queensland's National Parks, specifically within the Northern, Central and Southern parts of the state. Each book is in colour and over 160 pages long. Prices per book are $20 + $6.50 post and pack.
