Mr George Winter
George Winter's Citation

In 2018, the Executive Committee, Queensland Division of the Geological Society of Australia Inc approved the awarding the Neville Stevens Medal to one of our country members - Mr George Winter, from Esk, Queensland.

George Winter graduated from the University of NSW in 1967 with a BSc (Geology). Many years later in 2006, George completed a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) from the University of Southern Queensland.

From 1989 - 1993, George was teaching geology and civil engineering to external students at the Ipswich TAFE College, Bundamba. George has qualifications in Surveying & Metallurgy from the WA School of Mines, Kalgoorlie, and later from the Sydney Technical College. He also undertook studies in Quarrying at the Box Hill Institute, Victoria, in the 1990’s.

In more recent times, although semi-retired George has been instrumental in organising the 2017 and 2018 Field Days to the Esk Region and in preparing the Geological Note for the Esk Region for which he is a joint author. Since early 2018, George and others have prepared a geological log for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, a distance of over 160 km. It is hoped that this information will form the basis for a digital, self-guiding Geotrail App. which will be developed in the future. George is now looking to other rail trails further north in the Nanango, Goomeri, Kilkivan and Gympie areas.
