Specialist Group in Tectonics & Structural Geology Chris Powell Medal for Postgraduate Research in Tectonics and Structural Geology This medal may be awarded at each regular field conference of the SGTSG for an outstanding research paper arising from postgraduate research on some aspect of structural geology or tectonics. The paper must be published at the time of nomination, the research it describes must have been undertaken as part of a postgraduate research degree (Honours, Masters or PhD), and the nominee must either still be a postgraduate student, or have completed their postgraduate degree no more than three years before the closing date for nominations. The nominee must be first author of the paper and must be responsible for a substantial portion of the content. Nominees must be members of the SGTSG at the time of the award, and nominations should be made by a supervisor of the research project or other appropriate person. Nominations should include a copy of the paper, an explanation of why the paper is deserving of the award, and a statement outlining the nominee’s contribution in cases of multiple authorship. Preference will be given to nominees who undertook their postgraduate research at an Australian institution. The choice of recipient is at the sole discretion of the SGTSG Executive Committee, who also reserve the right to not to make an award.
Bruce Hobbs Medal for Structural Geology This medal may be awarded at each regular field conference of the SGTSG for excellent contributions to structural geology. Contributions may relate to any aspect of structural geology including field-based structural analyses, microstructural studies, experimental work, computer and analogue modelling of deformation, and regional structural syntheses. Nominees must be members of the SGTSG and preference will be given to Australian citizens. Any member may nominate another member for consideration by a written submission, which may be used as a basis for citation. Nominations will be assessed on the quality of scientific contribution rather than the age or experience of nominees. Specialist Group in Economic Geology AB Edwards Medal The AB Edwards Medal is awarded on an annual basis for the best paper on aspects of economic geology published in the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences. The award recognises important work in economic geology research in a broad sense (e.g., exploration geochemistry, ore deposit genesis and modelling, structural analysis of mineral systems, hydrothermal, magmatic and alluvial ore deposits). The purpose of the award is to encourage scientists to publish their work in the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences and consider the journal an appropriate forum to disseminate research findings and concepts relevant to economic geology. Once a year and after publication of a complete volume of the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences, the executive and nonexecutive
members of the SGEG Committee determine eligible articles and from these, the top three finalists are selected and ranked by majority vote. The selection criteria include:
