One of the most interesting things to come from our recent communication activities has been a coordinated set of membership statistics, published in our Register of Members.
These figures are the basis for understanding who we are as a professional society and, based on these, it is clear that we need to counter the notion that we are academic-based an therefore perhaps ‘dry’ and irrelevant to wider sectors within the geoscience community. This is, in fact, not who we are in terms of our member representation, according to the membership statistics. We must therefore direct our communications and deliverable thoughtfully and strategically, to represent ourselves according to our true demographic.
Geological Society of Australia members work in different areas, whether it is in tertiary institutions, state surveys, the minerals industry or consulting. The concentration of membership appears to be in the minerals industry and in tertiary institutions, closely followed by consulting and state surveys.
